The One About Week 20 Of Marathon Training

I can’t believe how well this week turned out. I was really nervous because it was my highest mileage week ever and so I was concerned I wasn’t going to be able to accomplish it all and have a good race. I did cut down my 8 miles on Saturday to only 3.5 but that allowed me to have a really good race on Sunday. Here’s how my week turned out:

Week 20 (Nov 12-18)
4 miles

4.25 miles + 6 miles bike
BodyPump

Done + 1 mile
4 easy

4.6 miles
Yoga

Off
8 miles

Done
8 miles

3.5 miles
Route 66 Half Marathon

Done New PR!
37 miles

35 miles

Monday: I headed to the gym and did 4.25 miles on the treadmill in 45 minutes. And then I did the bike for another half hour and got a little over 6 miles in.

Tuesday I did BodyPump class and I felt really tired the whole night, I’m not sure what was up with that. I did a mile warm-up on the treadmill before class.

Wednesday is usually my favorite day to run and I was looking forward to some easy miles. These 4.6 easy miles wound up being a lot faster than I thought they would be at 47 minutes but it was a great run. I did start having some hamstring pain in my left hamstring that is still lingering…I’m not really sure what that’s about.

Thursday I wasn’t feeling well and I was just exhausted; I have been pushing myself a lot lately and I’m just really ready to run my marathon, my body is tired and ready to be done with all this hard training. So I took a rest day and had a date night with Alex instead.

Friday I was home from work early and after a nap (see, really tired!) I went out and did another really fast run of 8 miles in 1:24, holy smokes! All my miles were in the 10:00’s and I was shocked. I was a little leery that I had overdone it for Saturday morning’s run.

Saturday I was originally going to do 16 miles in spite of the race the next day because I wanted to stick with my taper, but then I decided to split the run into 2, 8 mile runs. I’m not really sure what I was thinking, I rarely run back to back days, let alone 3 days in a row and I most certainly don’t run 8 miles and then try to run another 8 miles 12 hours later. So maybe I was a bit ambitious in thinking I could get all those miles in. BUT, I did get up and try. I made it 3.5 miles and I could have pushed myself to keep going but race day was looming in my mind and the pain in my hamstring was still there so I called it a day. And man it was cold at 5 am!

Sunday, oh what to say about Sunday? I think I’m still reeling at what I did out there yesterday, I don’t want to spoil my race report but I went out yesterday with a number in my head that I wanted to hit and by golly I hit it. But I’ll let you read my race report (hopefully up by Wednesday).

So week 20 is in the books! I am now less than 3 weeks away to the big day and I am ready! My body is definitely getting tired so these next 3 weeks will be about taking care of myself and allowing myself the much deserved taper. No more races and no more super long runs, I only have the turkey trot on Thursday and then it’s all downhill from there!

Here’s what this week will look like:

Week 21 (Nov 19-25)
Off (BodyPump?)
BodyPump
3 miles
8 mile Turkey Trot
off
12 miles
elliptical
23 miles

And the Holiday Booty Buster Challenge Starts today! I am so excited!!

Are you doing the HBBC? Are you running a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving day?

Congrats on both the PR AND a great week of training. To PR in a race that is coupled with a high mileage week is very impressive...and proof that you are getting stronger and faster!! :)
