The One About The Proposal

I have to be honest, I completely saw it coming! I know I’m horrible with surprises; I don’t like them. But, I will say that I wasn’t sure how he was going to ask and I wasn’t sure exactly when; I did suspect it would be sometime this past weekend though…

Alex and I had been talking for about a month or so about getting married and we had been talking to our families and we were discussing the timing of getting married and all the things associated with that conversation. We had been dating for a year and so we started talking rings. As much as it pained me to let him have control over the ring choosing I decided I would prefer him to do that on his own and let him surprise me. My youngest sister works at a jewelry store so I have them 3 guidelines (square cut diamond, thicker band and no crazy details) and then let them do all the work.

My sister had come in town this past weekend and I casually mentioned (read, begged) her to bring my ring along with her (since my ring was in Lubbock where she works) so that Alex could have it and we wouldn’t have to wait until we went out there this weekend. She told me she would try to remember….
Well she remembered and this past week Alex took my parents out and talked with them each asking for their blessing.

On Saturday, Alex said that we could go get sushi for lunch to celebrate my awesome race and when I asked which place we were going to he replied with “oh we will figure it out”, which I thought was odd but thought maybe he had a special place in mind and was trying to throw me off. Well we left his apartment and he turned in the opposite direction of where we always turn and within minutes he had pulled into the nature preserve that is by his apartments. We go over to the preserve on occasion because there are paved paths for walking and biking and then there are also hiking paths that we have hiked on before. Immediately I knew something was up. He told me he had packed a picnic instead. I pretty much knew exactly what was about to happen (for the record, poor Alex is terrible at being discreet about things!)

He had packed us a nice little picnic and I have to give him credit because I had no clue he had done this, so that does deserve bonus points! We ate our tuna pita pockets and fruit and he had my favorite Izze drinks for me, so very thoughtful!
After we ate we went walking through the trails and he began telling me all sorts of very nice things. He told me how he enjoyed the opportunity to meet with my parents this past week because in doing that and talking to them he was able to reaffirm the way he feels about me and our relationship. He told me that he feels blessed to have me in his life and that while he doesn’t feel he needs me in his life to make him a complete and happy person he realizes that with me in his life, his life is that much better. He told me that he’s so happy that we share common beliefs and dreams for our future, yet we have different passions and interests so that we can better one another and strengthen each other and grow.

He totally blew me away with the things he said. And yes, I did cry; I never thought I would be a girl to cry (even though I cry all the time!) but I did. I told him that as blessed as he feels I feel a thousand times more blessed to have him in my life (due to things in my past). I told him that I truly feel that when I am with him I experience God’s grace every day because of the way he loves me and supports me and that is the most amazing feeling in the world. I feel so blessed to have found someone that loves God more than he loves me because that makes his love for me complete.

Anyways, I had to be personal, I wanted to remember those moments, we found a perfect log to sit on by a little stream and he got down on one knee and asked if I would marry him, and of course I said yes!

I got to see the ring for the first time and I was so excited with how beautiful it looks, I couldn’t have done a better job myself!

We spent a few moments alone and took a couple of pictures and then I couldn’t wait to get back to the car where my phone was and call my family and friends. We spent the next hour and a half calling all of our family and a few friends before we updated on Facebook (priorities people!) and then we went to get frozen yogurt to celebrate, that man knows my heart!

I also must point out that at the yogurt place they had a new flavor, Roasty Toasty Marshmallow, and we think it was a sign because we will be roasting marshmallows at our wedding! It was delicious by the way!

I also want to note that it was cute that after Alex proposed he told me he was relieved to not be in charge of the ring anymore, it was now my responsibility and not his! He had only had it 6 days! He cracks me up!

That is so sweet! He did a great job! I love what you/he said about loving God more than each other. A lot of people don't realize how important that is and some would even think of it as an insult. I'm sure you too will be very blessed! Can't wait to see all the wedding planning posts coming! =)

You two are so cute :) David had my ring for a week and couldn't wait to give it to me. I don't think it was a responsibility issue though, because he held on to the band for 8 months!
I didn't realize how amazing it was that you didn't know Alex was cooking for your birthday until he got up to do so. I think he can keep some secrets when necessary ;) Again, we couldn't be happier for you guys!!!
